Sophia de Rooij

Professor of Internal medicine and Geriatrics, Groningen University, NL

Professor of Internal medicine and Geriatrics at the Faculty of Health, Medicine of Groningen University and internist-geriatrician at the University Medical Center Groningen in Groningen. Sophia de Rooij combines a career as a clinician with research in health service research. Sophia uses her clinical experience to inform her research and vice versa. In her research, she focuses on how care trajectories of vulnerable patients in need of acute care can be improved. She does this by connecting concepts and methodologies from different scientific disciplines to pertinent issues within fundamental research, healthcare logistics, education and management. Her research activities span the continuum from medical students to new consultants in a variety of specialties. She co-authored > 220 peer-reviewed publications. Under her guidance 25 PhD theses were completed. She is co-authored and edited several books and she developed a number of internationally awarded educational serious games.

Professor de Rooij is past President of the Dutch Society of Internal Medicine (2013 – 2016). She serves and has served on various national and international advisory and program committees (eg. Dutch society of Internal Medicine, Dutch Society of geriatrics, Royal Dutch College of Physicians, Dutch National Institute of Quality of Care, ZonMw, European delirium Association). Since 2016 she is deputy head of the department of Internal Medicine of the UMCG. She combines her management position with clinical research, seeing patients during consulting hours, academic research, mentoring of PhD students and training of residents in Internal Medicine and in Geriatrics.
